President Bush speech, Operation Iraqi Freedom
Operation Iraqi Freedom
March 19, 2003
President George W. Bush announced Operation Iraqi Freedom on March 19, 2003 in a speech aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier to the American public. President Bush declared the main goal of the mission (of Iraq) was to remove Saddam Hussein and his ability to create any WMDS (weapons of mass destruction). The President stated that Operation Iraqi Freedom would "disarm Iraq...free it's people, and...defend the world from grave danger." The statement marked the official beginning of the Iraq War. Bush goes on to talk about planning for the operation that started sometime after the September 11 tragedy in 2001, stating that we refuse to "live at the mercy of an outlaw regime that threatens the peace with weapons of mass murder." Bush described the operation as a coalition effort with more than 35 countries supplying naval, air bases, and intelligence. Safety of civilians was a main priority in the Iraq operation according the the speech. Bush addressed the grave danger that Saddam Hussein was putting to Iraqi civilians saying, "Saddam Hussein has placed Iraqi troops and equipment in civilian areas, attempting to use innocent men, women, and children as shields for his own military--- a final atrocity against his people." The speech highlighted the problem of the United States allowing the Iraqi citizens to be oppressed for far too long and concluded that the goal of the operation was to help Iraq maintain a stable, civil, and free country.
Operation Iraqi Freedom was a vital step in the beginning of the war. President Bush dramatically walked to the podium and addressed the United States about the upcoming invasion of Iraq in a "cool and collected" manner that conveyed confidence. This allowed the country to accept the proposal- especially after the horrific tragedy of 9/11. Along with public approval, President Bush would soon be directing troops into Iraq and summoning the war.
