December 14, 2003
Saddam Hussein, who created a secret police that terrorized the public while protecting his power after joining the Ba’ath Party and became President of Iraq. Iraq was accused of possessions of nuclear weapons and illegal oil sales that caused the United States to invade Iraq in March 2003 with a goal to eliminate Saddam's regime. Saddam quickly went into hiding only communicating with Iraq through videos, while the United States searched for him. On December 14, 2003, US soldiers found Saddam Hussein hiding in a 6-8 foot hole outside of Tikrit disheveled and unsanitary. The soldiers arrested Saddam, who did not resist, and brought him into US custody to face trial for numerous criminal cases.
Capturing Saddam Hussein was a monumental event in the war for both the United States and Iraq. On the Iraq side, their omnipotent leader was taken into custody and there was an increase of retaliation and crime throughout the streets. The United States reached their number one goal of capturing Saddam Hussein due to the threat of nuclear weapons in his possession. After Saddam was captured the US army gained more control in the war while Saddam’s 20 year reign ended after he was sentenced to hanging for crimes against humanity and died on December 30th 2006. The significance of capturing Saddam Hussein allowed the US to begin to focus on terrorist groups and recovering the government in Iraq. The US government also gained intelligence from Saddam about the Ba’ath Party and the possession of nuclear weapons.
